The 2026 Winter Games will have four locations in Milan, Cortina, Valtellina and Livigno. The four competition areas cover a total of 22,000 square kilometers, making it the most geographically extensive Winter Games in history, and Cortina is more than 420 kilometers from Milan, a drive of more than four and a half hours.
Milan and Cortina have traditionally excellent tracks for alpine skiing competitions. The only downside is that the competition areas are so far apart (see below for distances and drive times and a map for each venue). Athletes and spectators have to shuttle between the various competition areas. For example, Milan will host ice hockey, figure skating and short track speed skating competitions, while alpine skiing as well as curling and sled and snowmobile competitions are scheduled in Cortina. So, if you're going to watch the opening ceremony or the ice events, but also the snow events, almost everyone needs to relocate from Milan to the various host cities of the Dolomites, where Cortina is located.
