The organizational experience shown in large-scale sports events, the charm of tourism and cultural projects, and the many outstanding mountain resorts of Valtellina Mountains are the key factors for the success of the Milan-Cortina campaign. The two cities have been jointly designated as event organizers. (No precedent in the history of the Olympic Games). This is also the third Italian Olympic Games after the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics and the 2006 Turin Olympics.
The 25th Winter Olympics will be held from February 6 to 22, 2026, and the Winter Paralympics will be held from March 6 to 15. There are three regions participating in the organization of the Winter Olympics: Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige. The competition will be held in 4 main central areas: Milan, Valtellina, Cortina d’Ampezzo and Val di Fiemme. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at Milan San Siro Football Stadium and Verona Arena respectively.
In Milan, in addition to the San Siro Stadium, there are five venues involved in the Winter Games: Mediolanum Forum in Assago, which will be renovated for skating and short track competitions; the hockey game will be in the renovated PalaSharp in Lampugnano, and the newly built in Santa Giulia community. PalaItalia will be held; the media center will be located in the exhibition area of Rho-Fiera, and the award ceremony for the competition in Lombardy will be held in Piazza del Duomo.
Other venues in Lombardy will be arranged in Valtellina: the Stelvio circuit in Bormio for men’s alpine skiing, and the Mottolino, Sitas-Tagliede and Carosello 3000 areas in Livigno for snowboarding and freestyle Ski competition. The Valdidentro Biathlon Centre is the only place in Lombardy where this sport can be played, and will host the first Paralympic Biathlon and the opening event of cross-country skiing.
Cortina will hold a women’s alpine skiing competition at the Olympia delle Tofane circuit, and a snowmobile, sled and steel-framed snowmobile competition at the Eugenio Monti circuit. The Olympic ice rink built for the 1956 Winter Olympics will be renovated and used for curling competitions. The second Olympic medal plaza is located at the De Rigo stadium in Cortina.
Anterselva in the province of Bolzano is the designated venue for biathlon, while Baselga di Piné, Tesero and Predazzo in the province of Trento will host speed skating, cross-country skiing and ski jumping competitions.
